In Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, Sutra 1.24 tells us that Divine Consciousness is self-effulgent, shining with its own light, much like the sun. This sutra speaks to a profound truth about the nature of the Divine and, ultimately, about ourselves.
What Does It Mean to Be Self-Effulgent?
To be self-effulgent means to shine from within, to possess a radiance that is independent of external forces. The sun is a perfect metaphor. No matter what clouds or storms may pass, the sun continues to shine. In the same way,
Divine Consciousness is ever-present, radiant, and untouched by the changing tides of our lives, thoughts, or emotions.
In moments of stress, self-doubt, or when we feel disconnected from the world, it can be comforting to remember that there is a light within each of us that never dims. This inner light—the reflection of Divine Consciousness—is always present, ready for us to connect with it.
Finding Light Through Yoga Practice
One of yoga's most beautiful aspects is its ability to help us access our inner radiance. Physical practices, such as breathwork and meditation, can facilitate this connection.
Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar) are a particularly symbolic way to honour this sutra. Like the rising sun, Surya Namaskar energizes, uplifts, and reminds us of the light that sustains us. Each movement flows with the breath, bringing awareness to the energy that fuels our bodies and minds. When practising Sun Salutations, try visualizing the inner light within you expanding, shining brighter with each breath.
Heart-opening postures, such as Ustrasana (Camel Pose) and Anahatasana (Melting Heart Pose), can also help us connect with this radiant energy. These poses encourage a deep release in the chest and heart space, inviting us to experience openness, trust, and receptivity to the light within and around us.
Connecting to Inner Radiance: Meditation & Breathwork
Beyond physical movement, specific meditations and breathwork practices can help us connect to our self-effulgent nature. Here is a simple technique you can try:
Meditation on Light:
Find a comfortable seated position, and close your eyes.
Begin by visualizing a warm, golden light at the centre of your heart. This light represents your inner self, your true essence.
With each inhale, imagine the light expanding, growing brighter and more radiant.
With each exhale, allow any stress or tension to dissolve into the surrounding space, leaving only the warmth and brilliance of your inner light.
Continue this visualization for several minutes, feeling your entire body glowing with this internal radiance.
Living with Awareness of Inner Light
When we internalise the message of Sutra 1.24, we begin to recognise that no matter the external circumstances, we carry an inner light that is constant.
This light is not dependent on validation, achievement, or external success—it simply exists, shining on in the face of both joy and challenge.
By practising yoga and mindfulness, we can keep returning to this truth. Our inner light, like the sun, is self-effulgent. When we take time to nurture that connection, we align with the wisdom of Divine Consciousness and bring more light into our daily lives.
We will be exploring this in class this week; join me from Tuesday, 24th September, until Saturday, 28th.
