Finding Harmony Within - A Sun & Moon Yoga Exploration
The summer solstice brings an abundance of sunlight. Long days offer a chance to soak up the sun's energy, but they can also leave us drained or overstimulated. This is where the moon's calming influence comes in.
In yoga, we explore the opposing yet complementary energies of the sun and moon within ourselves. The sun represents warmth, activity, and outward focus. The moon embodies coolness, stillness, and introspection. By integrating these energies, we cultivate a sense of balance.
Sun & Moon Yoga: A Gentle Flow
A Sun & Moon yoga practice isn't about extremes. We don't want to push ourselves to exhaustion under the sun's gaze. Instead, we focus on:
Gentle Sun Sequences: We start with postures that gently awaken the body, promoting vitality without being overly stimulating. Think slow, flowing movements that emphasize breathwork and mindful transitions.
Restorative Moon Poses: As we transition to the moon's influence, we enter restorative postures bathed in soft light (or simply by closing our eyes). These poses encourage deep relaxation and allow our bodies to release tension. Supported Child's Pose, Reclined Butterfly, and Supine Spinal Twists are all great examples.
Visualization for Inner Balance
The highlight of this practice comes in relaxation (savasana). Here, you'll be invited to choose which source of light resonates most with you:
Sun's Energizing Warmth: If you're feeling sluggish, visualize the sun's golden light filling your body, revitalizing you from within.
Moon's Peaceful Glow: If you crave tranquillity, imagine the moon's cool, silvery light washing over you, inviting deep relaxation and inner peace.
Benefits of Sun & Moon Yoga:
Reduced Stress: By acknowledging both the stimulating and calming aspects within us, we can better manage stress.
Improved Sleep: The moon's influence in this practice promotes relaxation, setting the stage for a more restful night's sleep.
Enhanced Self-Awareness: By exploring the sun and moon energies, we gain a deeper understanding of our own needs and how to balance them.
