The endocrine system is responsible for producing hormones, including those that are often associated with happiness and well-being. The primary glands involved in producing these "happiness hormones" are the brain's hypothalamus and the pituitary gland, as well as other organs such as the adrenal glands and pancreas. Here are some of the key hormones associated with happiness and the glands that play a role in their production, I like to remember them with the acronym DOSE:
D **Dopamine:** Dopamine is known as the "feel-good" neurotransmitter. It's produced in several areas of the brain, including the substantia nigra and ventral tegmental area. The hypothalamus and pituitary gland also play roles in regulating dopamine release.
O **Oxytocin:** Oxytocin is often called the "bonding hormone" or "love hormone." It's produced by the hypothalamus and released by the pituitary gland. Oxytocin is released during social bonding, childbirth, and breastfeeding, among other situations.
S **Serotonin:** Serotonin is often referred to as the "happiness hormone." It's synthesized in the brain's nerve cells but requires the amino acid tryptophan, which comes from the diet. The brain's hypothalamus and pituitary gland are involved in regulating serotonin production.
E **Endorphins:** Endorphins are often associated with feelings of pleasure and pain relief. They are produced by the hypothalamus and released by the pituitary gland and other areas in response to various stimuli, including exercise, pain, and excitement.
These hormones work in complex ways and have diverse effects on mood, emotions, and well-being. It's important to note that while these glands and hormones are associated with happiness and well-being, emotions and mental states are influenced by a combination of factors, including genetics, environment, lifestyle, and individual experiences.
The following table summarises activities and nutrients that encourage the production of each hormone. You will notice a few entries that tick all of the boxes. In our circle we discussed using this framework as a tool for mental health, so if you find yourself feeling low you can refer to this and pick an four activities/nutrients from the table to tick each of the four boxes.
Our women's circle meets every month on a Sunday and you can book your place here.
